You’re probably asking what in the heck I’m talking about. Kudarat was started as part of the answer to that question.

But let’s back up a minute and answer this question. Are you or someone you know one of the 80 million what? I’m talking about autoimmune diseases. Did you know that autoimmune diseases are collectively the number one disease condition in the US? For real.

According to Dr. Michael Ash, there are now around 80 million people in North America that are dealing with autoimmune issues. The thing is, this is really a modern day epidemic. In 1900, one in 10,000 had some sort of autoimmune disease. Now, it’s one in 250! Let that sink in a minute.

On top of that, there are three times as many women as men that are affected. Autoimmune diseases are the number one cause of death in women under the age of 65. And, once you develop one autoimmune disease, you’re likely to develop more than one. I personally dealt with a big ole pile of them. It’s like a domino effect – once you get one, more tend to follow. It definitely adds complexity to the equation when you’re trying to heal.

Here’s the thing about autoimmune diseases. You aren’t healthy one day and then BAM you’re sick the next, even though it might seem that way. The damage builds up over time. We’re talking years! The damage is silently taking place inside of your body. Those antibodies build up and up. As they build up, the damage is done.  Then, five to fifteen years later, your symptoms begin to show up.

So, all this time goes by, you feel good and normal, and then, like a frog being slowly heated up in water, you start noticing that you feel a little off. Then the symptoms start showing up, but they might point to a lot of things, so neither you nor your doctor know really what to do. But, the good news is that you can heal and you can start making some changes right now that will start reversing the damage.

When you break it down, there are really a few main triggers that lead to autoimmune disease. These are allergens and microbes, toxins, and stress. I don’t know about you, but I definitely see a connection here between these triggers and why so many more women are affected. Let’s talk about that.



I think that it’s really important to spend just a few minutes talking about what autoimmune diseases are.

There are over 100 forms of autoimmune diseases. Did you know that now research is showing that certain forms of heart disease and type two diabetes are now considered to be part of this nefarious family?! Whoa.

In a nutshell, autoimmune is an entire spectrum of diseases or disorders that have a common root cause –  your immune system attacks your body. It’s like your body is rejecting itself. Different autoimmune diseases occur as the immune system attacks different parts of the body. The big question is, what pissed your immune system off so much that it decided to attack your body? I mean, for real, it’s like you using a fire extinguisher to put out a candle. Major overreaction.

Actually, an amazing doctor, Liz Lipski has done some great breakthrough research that answers this question. It’s like this. It’s like a misfire between what our immune systems should be doing and what they really are doing. In our modern culture, our immune systems are like in her words, “a group of teenagers” with too much time on their hands. Our immune system’s job is to NOT react most of the time; but it gets into trouble because in this day and age, we are exposed to toxins, crappy food, mold, and stress that weren’t around before.

Holy cow. That is a lot to take in. Believe me, I know. Fortunately, there is a lot that we can control ourselves and that is truly awesome. Our bodies are miracles universes unto themselves.

There is a HUGE connection between gluten and autoimmune diseases. When most people think of gluten sensitivity, they think that it’s the same thing as celiac disease.

In reality, it is NOT the same thing. Gluten is a very powerful toxin. If you have gluten sensitive genes (and you can get easily tested for that) and you’re exposed to gluten either via your food or through your beauty products, then your body sees gluten as the enemy and it launches an attack. For some people, that leads to intestinal damage which then can lead to celiac, IBS, Chron’s, and others. For others, that immune response can lead to neurological damage in the form of MS. It leads to liver damage (did I mention I had acute autoimmune liver failure?). A lot of people end up with thyroid damage (been there, done that). Fibromyalgia, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. Have skin issues such as eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis?

Gluten is also known to disrupt hormones, including estrogen. This is a biggie for some really big reasons. Unexplained infertility along with  miscarriages are predominant symptoms of the interaction of gluten and our hormones. Infertility is on the rise.



Out of the 80 million people in the US dealing with autoimmune diseases, 60 million of those are women.

We are stressed out, we are exposed, on average, to 515 toxins every day just from our products, and we are getting sick without even knowing it.

I’m not sure if the dots have been connected when it comes to autoimmune disease rates in women and our personal care.  We slather a lot more on our bodies each day than the average guy does. With that being said, autoimmunity is on the rise for men too and we definitely don’t want to leave them out of the conversation.

For me, the holy grail to my healing was making that connection. According to Dr. Peter Osborne, it can take up to three years to heal from a gluten-induced condition. While I was doing everything “right” as far as overhauling my entire life in terms of diet, stress reduction, and all of that, the one thing I wasn’t paying attention to was what I was putting on my body. So, I stayed sick because the damage was still being done without me even knowing it.

Once I realized this, my life changed almost overnight. Yes, it took another couple of years to fully heal, but I did. And you can too. Or, better yet, not ever get sick in the first place.
