We take winter skin seriously here at Kudarat! Now that we’ve moved to Colorado, it’s game on! We are really getting to experience winter! Yay! So far, we’ve had many many feet of snow. It is truly something out of a Disney movie here. Bring it! Gently (or not!) falling snow, cozy afternoons and nights by the fire reading a good book, or if you’re like me, watching Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas non-stop, hiking through the snow-covered woods with the dogs, and enjoying steaming mugs of spiked cocoa.

But…one thing I didn’t account for was the bone-chilling, biting wind. We’re talking 80 mph winds. For real! And, let’s not forget about the bone-dry air here. After living in the ninth circle of hell of 100% humidity for most of the year, coming to a climate where 5 to 10% humidity is the glorious norm was a bit of a shock to my skin.

So, while I’m truly in my “element”, I now really have to contend with what winter can do to my skin. That got me thinking about your skin too. When it comes to winter skincare, the name of the game is being proactive. Self-care, especially this time of year is super important.

Okay, so what can we do to take care of our skin during this most wonderful, joyous time of the year?! Read on to find out!

Here are some great tips to take care of you and your skin all season long:

Winter Weather Skincare Routine

  1. MOISTURIZE FROM HEAD TO TOE!

Even if you don’t think you need it, make sure slathering on a rich lotion all over is part of your routine. It only takes a few minutes, pinky swear! Your skin really does need a bit more attention during the winter months.

But, make sure you choose carefully. Stay away from anything that can actually do more harm to your skin than help it. Did you know that ingredients like mineral oil will temporarily hydrate your skin, but will actually block your pores and cause your skin to suffocate? Temporary hydration means having to reapply a lot. Um, none of us have time for that and talk about running through your lotion way too fast! On top of that, you don’t want to expose yourself to and absorb any of this nastiness into your system. 2. Get scrubbing!

“Oh the weather outside is frightful…” But, your skin doesn’t have to be! Regular exfoliation is an integral part of winter skincare. If you’ve got a bunch of dead skin cells hanging around, it makes it harder for your face moisturizer and body lotion to penetrate your skin. Our skin will get and stay thirsty. We don’t want that! In order for our skin to look and feel its best, we need to get rid of those excess dead skin cells. In the winter, I exfoliate a couple of times per week.

Of course, we have several yummy body scrubs that will do a great job of taking care of you and are made to use with our lotions. What makes our scrubs different is that they have the consistency of vanilla ice cream. This means that you’re not ending up with a slippery, oily mess. There are lots of ways that exfoliation helps our skin. We’ve touched on this earlier on. 3. WATCH WHAT YOU EAT AND DRINK!

This sounds like common sense. In the winter, when our skin is at a greater risk of becoming very dry and irritated, eating well, especially foods with omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids along with foods high in water will help keep you moisturized from the inside out. Vitamin C will help support collagen production as well as ward of colds. Avoiding all the “bad-for-you” stuff (believe me, there are tons of wonderful grain-free sweets and treats out there now), will keep toxic, oxidative stress down.

Drink lots of water as well. I honestly have a hard time doing that. I think a lot of us do! Here’s a little trick with the water that will help you get enough. When I’m drinking anything else, I always double fist. I’ll have water in one hand and whatever else I’m drinking in the other. It works!

I have a confession. I have already fallen off the wagon this season. I got invited to a bunco party. It was fun. I succumbed to temptation. I ate something I shouldn’t have. We are talking a few bites. Caution thrown to the howling wind. Guess what happened? Inflammation central. Not only did I swell up, but my body went on a war march. The extra stress on my body was not a good thing. Add that to lots of itchiness and breaking out and we’re talking a pretty unhappy hot mess. We are what we put into our bodies. Our bodies will let us know when we’ve gone awry. I was even double fisting…Fortunately, since our scrubs also act as detoxifiers, I’ve been able to calm my skin down. Whew!

So, with all that being said, please, take care of yourself, inside and out. Your skin will thank you for it!
