WHAT IT IS + WHY WE LOVE IT

Move over nasty microbeads! Kudarat Skincare has a safe, natural Gluten Free skin solution that’s vegan and cruelty free! Why clean your face with DIRTY ingredients when we’ve got something way better and natural? We ADORE Rosehips for the bounty of skin-loving benefits it offers from both the inside-out and inside-in that nourish, protect, and rejuvenate. Rosehips (Rosa canina) are the seeds of the wild rose bush and have been used for thousands of years. They primarily grow in the southern Andes mountains of South America. However, we also have it growing wild here at Kudarat’s headquarters in the central Rockies of Colorado! I first spotted it all over the place on a hike a couple of years ago in late summer.  Actually, this is when I got the inspiration to develop an amazing face scrub where rosehips would be the star! Also, being a scientist and always researching, I came across this neat little tidbit of info—plants from higher altitudes tend to have higher antioxidant levels, which we love. Does it get any better?!  Well, as a matter of fact…

The Andean Indians of Chile have cherished the anti-inflammatory benefits of rosehips in their medicinal practices along with their skin and hair care regimens. Ooh! It was also used by the Egyptians, Mayans, and Native Americans for its amazing healing properties. Rosehips were even used as a replacement for citrus during World War II. Why? Get this—they contain almost 60 times the vitamin C content of any citrus fruit!

Before diving into all the skin-loving benefits that rosehips provide, no discussion would be complete without mentioning how to harvest them and harness all of that vitamin C!

HARVESTING + HARNESSING THE VITAMIN C ROSEHIPS

Step one, head to the hills on a nice, crisp Fall afternoon and take a hike. No doubt, you’ll find rosehips along the trail. After roses bloom and they die off naturally, rosehips are on the way! If you can’t make it to the trail and you don’t have your own rose bushes in your yard, get friendly with someone who does! But, if you go that route, please make sure no pesticides have been used. When rosehips are bright red and soft, they are ready to be harvested!

Step two, gather a few (or many!) handfuls and head to the house. Finally, rinse and they are ready to use!

So, how can you take advantage of all of the high vitamin C content in fresh rosehips? Making a tea is my favorite way. Check out this simple recipe…

Ingredients

1 TBSP fresh rosehips

1 Stick Cinnamon

1 TSP Stevia or Honey (optional)

8 oz Water

How To

Place the rosehips and cinnamon in a tea infuser and place in a mug. Heat and pour hot water over rosehips and cinnamon and let steep for about 5 minutes. Add stevia or honey. Enjoy!

I mention drinking the tea because there’s this cool study that showed that when taken orally, rosehips are pretty awesome when it comes to skin moisture and elasticity. Double duty! We love that!

THE MANY SKIN BENEFITS OF ROSEHIPS

I could go on for a long time about rosehips. But, you’re busy, so let’s just hit the highlights. So, brew yourself up a cuppa tea, and plop down for a few minutes of all things about our sweet little bright red rosy fruit!

Essential fatty acids – rosehip seeds are rich in omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids, which help the skin to stay hydrated, plump and moist.

ANTIOXIDANTS – powerful antioxidant protects the skin from oxidation damage and encourages the skin’s natural repair function along with helping to brighten the skin and reduce uneven skin tone and discoloration.

COLLAGEN PRODUCTION – ALL OF THAT VITAMIN C STIMULATES THE PRODUCTION OF COLLAGEN AND REDUCES WRINKLES AND FINE LINES. ITS CELL RENEWAL CAPABILITY IMPROVES SKIN FIRMNESS AND ELASTICITY.

Cell regeneration – ROSEHIPS PROTECT THE SKIN ON THE SURFACE AND REGENERATE CELLS IN THE DEEPEST LAYERS.

Sun damage protection – rosehips offer serious sun protection, thanks to all the antioxidants it contains. These antioxidants ward off sun damage, skin cancer, and the visible effects of photoaging like pigmentation.

ANTIINFLAMMATORY – inflammation can wreak havoc on our skin and lead to premature                              aging. Rose hips contain tons of anti-inflammatory agents.

These are the main and amazing benefits that using rosehips topically can provide. But, real quick, I had to include this tidbit… according to one study, rosehip extract actually reduced the growth and migration of breast cancer cells! Wowzer!
