Just that 2 word little phrase, “self-care” can trigger many of us. I’m just going to jump right out and say it. Self-care is not selfish. In fact, it’s a requirement. ALWAYS, and I mean always, take time for yourself, especially during the holidays when things can get nuts!

I like to use the analogy of the instructions your flight attendant gives you during the pre-flight safety demo. You are told to put your oxygen mask on FIRST before assisting other passengers. This is a great example of how necessary self-care is. Otherwise, you will be of use to no one, including yourself.

Here are some cozy self-care rituals to try during the chilly winter months:

Winter Weather Skincare Routine

Make taking care of your skin a priority! This is easy to do and only takes a few minutes, pinky swear! Your skin needs a little more TLC during the winter months, when the weather tends to be more drastic.

Be sure to wash your face morning and night. But, make sure you use a face wash that doesn’t contain ingredients that will irritate or dry out your skin.  Also, keep the water warm—you don’t want it too hot or cold. Kudarat has 2 great face washes, depending on your needs. Whichever you choose, your skin will be left thoroughly cleansed and naturally hydrated.

To save time, you can wash your face while in the shower. And speaking of…don’t forget that skincare is from head to toe. A natural and moisturizing body wash is the way to go. Avoid formulas that contain sulfates and other harsh ingredients. Not only will your skin dry out and get irritated, but you will expose yourself to unnecessary toxins. Kudarat has several naturally scented organic body washes that will leave your skin happy.

Last but not least, moisturize your skin every day! Use a face moisturizer that contains natural oils that won’t dry out your skin and will protect you from the sun. You don’t need chemical spf’s—you can get what you need from plants. Try Kudarat’s Revitalizing Moisturizer. And for the neck down, an ultra-absorbing lotion that won’t clog your pores is the way to go.

Finally, using a scrub a couple to a few times per week will help keep your skin soft, smooth and glowing! We’ve got you covered there too!

Take a walk on the wild side

“Oh the weather outside is frightful…” Well, maybe, but not all the time.  Try to get outside at a couple of times per week, even if this just means walking down the driveway to your mailbox. There’s something very peaceful about being outside this time of year. Feel the crisp air on your face, listen to the sound of snow or the last of the fallen leaves crunching under your feet, catch a whiff of a cozy fire burning in a neighbor’s fireplace. Take a few precious moments just for yourself and take pleasure in the simplicity of just being and enjoying your surroundings. That quiet stillness this time of year is gold. It’s amazing what a taking a break can do for the soul. So, put on your hat and gloves, bundle up and get out there!

Enjoy a cup of tea or gluten-free hot chocolate

This is truly one of life’s simple pleasures. There are some amazing winter tea blends out there. Here’s a link to some great and unusual blends: https://homemaderecipes.com/hot-tea-recipes/.

If you’d rather indulge in some rich, decadent hot chocolate, here’s the recipe for you: https://www.easypaleo.com/paleo-hot-chocolate/. You can change it up a bit to make it yours! Have fun and play with it until your taste buds are dancing.

And remember, there is no guilt involved. Take it with you in a thermos during that walk or while you’re sitting by the fire and taking a moment to reflect upon all that is good in your life.

But, if for some reason you just can’t give yourself permission to indulge in the hot chocolate and you’ve already had some tea, you can always get the best of both worlds—our chocolate decadence body products that smell good enough to eat while nourishing your skin—totally guilt-free!

Have a glass of vegan gluten-free wine

Huh? Say what? While wine itself is gluten-free, the fining agents used—what is used to clarify and stabilize the wine—may not be. But, no worries, we’ve found some wine out there that fits the bill. It’s not overly expensive and is not just gluten-free, but also vegan and organic. Can’t beat that!  So head on over to Frey Wine at http://www.freywine.com.

I love pouring myself a glass in my favorite snowflake wineglass and then enjoying it responsibly while listening to great holiday music and doing anything from cleaning the kitchen after supper to relaxing at the end of the day.

Practice Gratitude

This one is perhaps the easiest yet most profound thing you can do for yourself.  Gratitude can literally change your life. Gratitude is just an expression of appreciation for what we have. We can do it anywhere, anytime. It makes us happier no matter what is happening in our lives (we all have stuff going on), it makes us healthier, strengthens our emotions, makes us more optimistic…I could go on and on.

I have a quick example of what gratitude can do, even when you are possibly at your lowest. I suffered for many years with a variety of autoimmune illnesses, cancer, you name it. At one point, I did ask, “why me?” But, I kept going, and sometimes my gratitude was as simple as appreciating that it was all part of a bigger plan. Other times, I’d just be thankful to be alive. It wasn’t always easy to be grateful or to even find anything to be grateful for, but I stuck with it. Had I not gone through this struggle and not kept what at times was a teeny tiny drop of gratitude in my daily thoughts, then Kudarat would’ve never been born. I may not have gotten better, I may not have been gifted with seeing the bigger picture, and I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now—helping as many people as possible not have to go through what I went through.

So, when you’re driving down the road, dealing with those “delightful blessings” known as your children who don’t give a damn because the Elf is back at the North Pole, while you’re struggling with something bigger, or in one of those amazingly precious moments while you’re not having to do anything at all, just pick one thing, anything, and say “thank you”.  It has an additive effect—each day builds on the previous and the next…Before you know it, even at the most insane times, there will be an unseen hand keeping you going.

These are just a handful of some simple things that you can do for yourself. There’s only one YOU in the world and you’re worth taking care of!
