We’re having an AHA moment!

Did you know that fruit extracts are an amazing source of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) along with enzymes and antioxidants? We all know that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” but fruits also benefit our skin in a major way when applied topically.

AHAs have been around for a long time—even Cleopatra, known for her legendary beauty, supposedly used them. The story goes that she bathed in sour milk (a source of lactic acid) to keep herself looking fresh and young. In this day and age, AHAs are found in a lot of skincare products, including ours. So, what are they?

Alpha Hydroxy Acids in a Nutshell

Natural AHAs are compounds derived mainly from fruit and sugars. There are five main types of AHAs found in skincare products:

  • Glycolic acid (from sugar cane)
  • Lactic acid (from milk)
  • Malic acid (from apples and pears)
  • Citric acid (from oranges and lemons)
  • Tartaric acid (from grapes)

AHAs promote smoother, younger looking skin by increasing the rate of cell renewal. They are awesome exfoliators and increase blood flow to the skin, so they help minimize fine lines and wrinkles. They are also great for reducing acne.

So, if you’re like me and love having beautiful, glowing skin, you’ll want to be sure and feed your skin a healthy dose of AHAs every day! At Kudarat, we use a concentrated blend of fruit and sugar extracts that are high in naturally occurring AHAs.

We put the emphasis on natural AHAs because many of the products out there that contain AHAs aren’t from a source you’d want to put on your skin. For example citric acid is commonly derived from mold grown from GMO corn! So, it’s really important to  know where your ingredients are being sourced. I don’t know about you, but the last thing I want to put on my skin is yucky mold, especially from GMO corn, which is in itself, problematic.

What are some of the AHAs we use in our formulations? We’ve listed just a few here for you below:

Orange (Citrus Dulcis) Peel Extract

Most people just toss their orange peels into the garage or the composter without a second a thought. But, did you know that orange peels are extremely beneficial to the skin? In fact, they do wonders for brightening the skin and healing acne. The powerful antioxidants in oranges fight off free-radicals that damage healthy skin cells. Free radicals play a bigtime role in creating wrinkles and sagging skin. Also, the calcium found in oranges protects the skin from premature aging.

Sugar Maple (Acer Saccharum) Extract

Sugar maple’s don’t just leave us in awe during the autumn months from their spectacular bright orange, yellow and red leaves or give us that yummy maple syrup that we love to slather all over our pancakes (gluten-free of course!). Sugar maple is a powerful natural alpha hydroxy acid that minimizes and repairs cell damage.

Lemon (Citrus Medica Limonum) Extract

Not just for flavoring your tea! If you are looking for a quick fix for full, oily, and aging skin, then look no further! The natural enzymes gently exfoliate while the high vitamin C content deeply nourishes your skin. Even better, lemon is one of the best natural ways to get rid of those pesky dark spots that seem to appear out of nowhere.

Kudarat’s Rejuvenating Face Wash and Revitalizing Moisturizer contain yummy and yes, 100% natural alpha hydroxy acids. When washing your face, be sure to leave the face wash on your face for at least 30 seconds. Even after you rinse it off, the AHAs will continue working hard, doing their job. You will be amazed at how soft and smooth your skin looks and feels! Follow with Kudarat’s moisturizer and before you know it, you will be giving Cleopatra a run for her money!

One last tidbit… AHAs can make you sun-sensitive. So don’t go out into the sun without protecting yourself! Fortunately, our Revitalizing Moisturizer contains meadowfoam seed oil, which is an awesome natural source of UV protection. I used it all last summer in the Rocky Mountains where the sun is very intense and never had a problem.
