When you take a look at our labels and our website, besides seeing a full listing of every single ingredient that is found in our products, you will also see a listing of what you won’t find in our products. We are exposed to so many toxins in our every day lives. I’m living proof of how prolonged exposure and overload can make us seriously sick. We’ve done a ton of research on the science about the effects of the ingredients that we don’t use on humans as well as plants, animals, and our world. We’ve also discovered along the way that the average person has over 200 synthetic chemicals stored in their bodies—imagine what happens long term—we’re like toxic storage dumps.

We are committed to doing our part to help keep ourselves along with the plants and animals and the planet healthy! Once you go down the road of dis-ease and then come out on the other side, you do everything you can to help keep others from having to go through that.

One of the biggest takeaways from our research that we want to share is that we can absolutely gather everything we need from plants that cause no harm and which can be harvested sustainably. Also, it is possible to develop formulas where every single ingredient serves as purpose. Fillers aren’t needed.

Below, we summarize the ingredients we don’t use and the reasons why. If you want to check out some of our references, just click on the words in light green and you’ll be taken to the articles.

What + Why We Don’t Use…

GLUTEN

Gluten, a nasty protein found in all grains to varying degrees (especially GMO “super” grains), including corn, can wreak havoc on the bodies of those people who are intolerant and/or sensitive to it.  Besides causing harm to our bodies in the form of many auto-immune diseases including lupus, fibromyalgia, and MS, along with inflammation, fatigue, and joint pain, to name just a few, gluten can also have a negative effect on our skin. The presence of gluten activates our immune system and this can lead to acne, eczema, dermatitis, etc. Our skin can become very irritated and angry—because it is! Gluten will also age your skin by causing wrinkles and a loss of elasticity along with puffy eyes.

There are a lot of people out there who are suffering from the toxic effects of gluten but are totally unaware of it—if you’re having skin issues, it’s very possible that your body can’t handle gluten. Most people associate gluten with just celiac disease, but it goes way, way deeper than that. Did we mention unexplained infertility? We will talk a lot more about gluten (and inflammation) in future posts, but before moving on, a couple of more things we wanted to make you aware of about gluten is that seventy-five percent of people with autoimmune diseases are women. We, women, use a LOT of products. Yes, you can absorb gluten-derived ingredients through the skin—until I removed all exposure to gluten (I was getting it through my beauty products), my body just would not heal.

PARABENS

Parabens are used as preservatives in most conventional personal care products. The American Chemical Society estimates that parabens are in about 85% of all personal care products. They are very effective in preventing microbial growth in products which is why they’re so popular. Companies with very large distributions use them the most as it allows their products to stay on the shelf for many years. However, a lot of questions are being asked because parabens have been found in breast cancer tumors and are linked to endometriosis. Does this mean they can be linked to female breast cancer, increasing rates of male breast cancer and testicular cancer and declining sperm counts (infertility)? The jury is still out, but regardless, they do add to the toxic load on your body. It’s important that your skincare products are safe and there are healthier options that do the job very nicely. Fortunately, more and more viable options are becoming available thanks to you, the consumer.

PETROCHEMICALS

Lots of petrochemicals, like mineral oil (aka petrolatum), along with petroleum jelly, are used in many personal care products. Mineral oil masks itself as estrogen, causing estrogen dominance and that can lead to side effects such as depression, weight gain, thyroid problems, and breast cancer. It also negatively impacts skin function, causing it to age prematurely and aggravate acne. Cell renewal is slowed, collagen breaks down and connective tissue is destroyed. Also, since it doesn’t allow absorption, no beneficial ingredients can be absorbed into your skin. At the same time, mineral oil blocks pores from releasing toxins. Our skin is our largest organ and one of the primary ways our bodies detox. When the skin is prevented from doing its job, the toxins are then stored in our fat cells. Over time, this can lead to major problems like ovarian dysfunction, endometriosis, miscarriages and damage to the immune system. A 2011 article in the Journal of Womens Health stated that there is a lot of evidence for cosmetics being a source of mineral oil contamination in women.

PHTHALATES

Phthalates change the texture and quality of skincare products. They are also used in fragrance to make it last longer. They can be absorbed through the skin along with the lungs, intestines, and even through the bloodstream via IV’s. Phthalates are estrogen disrupters and cause reproductive problems, especially for the guys and have been linked with liver cancer, breast cancer, and thyroid dysfunction. They have also been connected to rising obesity rates, especially abdominal obesity!

SULFATES

These are detergents or foaming agents found in cleansers, shampoos, and even toothpaste. They are very harsh detergents that strip the skin’s moisture barrier, which is linked to immunity and can disrupt your skin’s health and well as cause irritation. Our cleansers are made from aloe, shea, coconut, and jojoba and are much gentler while still getting the job done.

ETHOXYLATED INGREDIENTS

Ethoxylation is a chemical reaction where ethylene oxide, which is a known carcinogen, is added to a substance like a fatty alcohol. One of the by-products of ethoxylation is 1,4-dioxane, which is another carcinogen. It’s also a major environmental and groundwater contaminant and causes mutations in animals. A lot of ingredients in the beauty industry fall into this category. Ingredients that end in “eth”, PEGs, emulsifying wax, polysorbates, and phenoxyethanol are ones you may be familiar with. Without sounding like a broken record, they have been linked to cancer, reproduction and fertility issues, birth and developmental defects, and are toxic to organs. They also reduce skin’s moisture levels and accelerate aging. A lot of anti-aging products contains these. Ethoxylated ingredients do not do your skin or your body any favors.

SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES

Most fragrances in lotions, shampoos and many other beauty products are composed of aromatic hydrocarbons and phthalates. Some fragrances have hundreds of components but only have to be listed as a single ingredient—fragrance. Synthetic fragrances are allergenic and can cause everything from headaches to breakouts. We don’t use them. Our fragrances are 100% natural and certified organic. We either use essential oils or plant essences and the aromatic parts of plants which are infused in sunflower oil, giving us amazingly pure and wonderful scents.

SYNTHETIC COLORS

Artificial colors and dyes which are usually labeled as “FD&C” colors cause allergic reactions and are now thought to be toxic. It takes up to 25 chemicals to creative various colors—that’s a lot of chemicals and most of them are petroleum-derived! We do not add colors to our products. However, some of our natural ingredients such as Himalayan pink salt, which has wonderful exfoliating and nourishing benefits for the skin, add beautiful color to our products.

This list is definitely not exhaustive, but we wanted to summarize some of the worst ingredients out there. We promise you will never find any of these ingredients along with others such as polysorbate-20 or glycols.
